If history is any guide, we should be worried and bearish about the president’s tariffs. While there is a great deal of temptation to point to the Smoot- Hawley tariffs, to us the more relevant comparison is the Nixon administration. Recall that President Nixon took a series of protectionist steps early in his tenure.
