As the economic pie shrinks, the only way to remain in power is to gain increasing control of the executive, legislative, and judicial process. In a true democracy this is somewhat difficult to accomplish. However, it is not as difficult in countries where democratic institutions are not that strong. Venezuela is the perfect example for this. One can easily argue that Argentina, Russia, and Turkey are well on their way.
