Large-scale bond purchases or quantitative easing (QE) has been implemented by the U.S., U.K., and Japanese central banks. Depending on who one talks to, the program has been a great success. There are some empirical regularity on the effect of the program on the economies. First, the financial markets responded positively and in most cases the market is at around or above the pre-crisis levels in all three economies. However, when it comes to the real economy, the story is a bit different.
