Several of the global trends have had a disproportionate impact on the emerging markets. Those economies intensive in the production of commodities have experienced an adverse terms of trade effect. Also, the uncertainty and the decline in the relative economic performance of the region in relation to the rest of the world–in particular the U.S.–has resulted in a depreciation of their currencies vis a vis the U.S. dollar and has further added to some of the emerging economies’ economic difficulties.
