The Determinants and Consequences of Trade Restrictions in the U.S.

On both sides of the Atlantic, protectionism is on the rise. Here in the States, our pro-free trade President has asked the ITC to investigate whether steel imports are injuring domestic producers. Under Section 201 of U.S. trade law, the president has the authority to temporarily curb steel imports if the International Trade Commission determines that current import volumes are harming domestic producers. The Europeans are certain to retaliate to any such curb and will also try to defend their rights in front of the World Trade Organization. The rise in protectionism is also evident in Euroland, but in a slightly different way.
