Bidenomics needs a four-legged stool to stand on: The next two legs

November 29, 2021

The Democrats in congress are arguing that the Republican must help with the votes to lift the debt ceiling and authorize new spending increases. The Democrats point that they voted to increase the limits when the Republicans were in charge. The Democrats are claiming that historically these increases have been bipartisan and that the Republicans should stay with tradition and honor precedents. But if that is the case, one must wonder why they are willing to pass the spending legislation using reconciliation without a single Republican vote and all the while they are invoking bipartisanship on the spending and debt limit increases. A cynic would argue that if something goes wrong, that they want the Republicans to share the blame for profligate spending and excessive borrowing. But it is also apparent that the Democrats do not want share in the building of a truly bipartisan bill. What will happen if the Republicans do not play along? If the Republicans do not go along, the Democrats will have to pursue budget reconciliation on all these bills. At which point the Democrats will own the whole enchilada. They will get credit for any good that comes along and the blame for any economic mistake. Failure to pass these two legs of the stool would derail Bidenomics.
