The Debt Limit and the Budget Negotiations

May 25, 2023

The debt limit negotiations have become a recurrent theme in modern times. The party in power usually advocates for an outright increase in the debt limit. In contrast the opposition party favors linking government spending and the overall budget to the debt limit. No political party has a monopoly on its attempts to link the debt limit to the government’s budget. Yet it is ironic that both parties favor the linkage when they are in the opposition and not in control of the White House. The linkage of the debt limit to the budget is not necessarily an argument in favor of across-the-board spending cuts. The debate is a matter of spending choices.
