Report Detail Summary

Trump versus Powell

January 14, 2026

Getting rid of Powell would be a short-term success; the lawfare if successful would be a two-edged sword; it could be used by future administrations to bully the Fed into doing what they want. It is ironic that the Trump administration is using the same tools that the previous administration and its allied used against him. While we believe that Jerome Powell has done a terrible job at the Fed, he should be allowed to finish his term. Doing so will preserve the institutional integrity of the Fed. Hence, we have reasons to oppose the attempts to remove Jerome Powell from the Fed as well as we oppose the attempts to reduce or eliminate the Fed independence. If the President does not like the Fed independence , then he should attempt to change the Fed charter and see if he can bring congress along to affect these changes. Lawfare is not the way to bully the institution into doing what he wants. This is a bad precedent that he is setting. Using lawfare to eliminate the Fed independence may be a short-term victory but it could end up in a long run defeat.
