Gerrymandering
February 24, 2026
Redistricting has become a political hot potato in this election cycle. In an unprecedented move and a break for the traditional once-a-decade redistricting following the census, some states have taken action to initiate a mid-decade redistricting push. The origins can be traced to President’s Trump urging and subsequent actions by Texas Republicans to redraw their congressional map to gain additional GOP seats ahead of the 2026 midterms. That move was intended to net the Republican up to five additional congressional seats. As to be expected , it set off a tit‑for‑tat national escalation, with Democrats in California and other states responding by pushing their own partisan maps. Both parties are taking action to protect and improve their likelihood of success in the coming midterms. have devolved into a mid-decade redistricting war. A key point to make is that these redistricting moves are taking place in trifecta states. That is states where one party controls the governorship, the state senate and state representatives. The trifecta states tend to govern and implement their economic agenda unopposed. If their economic programs are successful , capital and people will also be attracted. The state will prosper and perform above average and gain population . In turn , when the result of the decade census is taken and subsequent reapportionment is announced , the increased population could result in an increase in the congressional delegation and electoral college representation, thereby increasing the state influence at the national level. Good polices lead to a virtuous cycle of reapportionment. In contrast , policies that reduce the incentive structure induce an outmigration which with the census reapportionment could result in a reduction in the state congressional delegation and electoral college representation. Bad policies generate a vicious cycle of reapportionment. The decline in the democratic trifectas and the disproportionate transformation of democratic trifecta into republican trifectas may be explained the policies enacted by red and blue administrations.
