Report Detail Summary

Rating the Fed Chairs: 1970-2026

March 19, 2026

We used the Misery Index and the Inflation rate during the first and last year of a Fed chair to evaluate and rank their performance. Our process ranks Paul Volker as the best performing US central banker of the last seven decades. He is followed in descending or der by Alan Greenspan, Janet Yellen, Wiliam Miller, Ben Bernanke, Arthur Burns and Jerome Powell. In short, Volker emerges as the most successful central banker since 1970, while Powell ranks as the least effective. Godspeed and good riddance Mr. Powell.
