First-Half 1998: Performance and a Look Ahead

The nation continued to register stellar economic figures through the first half of the year. And now in its eighth year of continuous expansion, the U.S. economy has not exactly indicated it is ready to take a breather. Output as measured by the gross domestic product increased at a startling 5.4% annual growth rate in the first quarter, inflation slowed to levels not seen in years, at least until the final month of the half, and the S&P 500 posted a 17.7% rise over the period.
