October 09, 1998
The global financial and economic turmoil has many investors concerned. When, they want to know, will the markets begin to behave more calmly, with less uncertainty and, most importantly, more profitably. But while markets everywhere were hit hard in the third quarter, year-to-date regional performance varied significantly. As of October 6; the European and U.S. markets gained 3.32% and 2.36% respectively. The Emerging Markets and Japan didn't enjoy such good fortune. Markets in Asia and Latin America took a drubbing. Year-to-date performance in the Emerging Markets was off 39.08% while Japan declined 18.82%. This large regional performance differential underscores the importance of a global portfolio strategy. An asset-allocation strategy that correctly anticipated these differences would have added significant value. You must have an active account to view these reports.
