The Myth of a Dollar Asset Overhang

Not surprisingly, every few years we start getting articles in the press that worry about a sudden unwillingness by investors abroad to continue adding to their already large dollar assets. In this scenario, such action would, according to the worriers, set off a panic causing the dollar to tank, interest rates to surge and the U.S. to sink into a crisis. Before getting into the likelihood of such an event and how it would come about, we would like to establish first the impact on the world economy of such a move.
