Fannie and Freddie: The RTC Redux

The recent U.S. Treasury intervention of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac brought back memories of the S&L debacle and the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC). A review of the S&L debacle provides several important lessons for financial institution regulators and investors in general. Moreover, the legislation enacted in response to the crisis substantially reformed the industry and dramatically altered Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) operations. The possibility of parallels between the two episodes could provide some insight into the performance of the economy in the aftermath of the government intervention.
