Presumably outsourcing accelerates as we sign free trade agreements and open our economy to international trade. Yet as we look at the data in Figure 1 we can see a downwards secular trend for the unemployment rate. The decline in the unemployment rate accelerated after the signing of NAFTA. A casual look at the data suggests that rather than causing more unemployment, the opening of trade reduced the unemployment rate.
