Unions, Compensation, the Politics of Special Interest Groups, and Their Impact on Government Spending

In the case of the private sector, unions negotiate for the workers and management negotiates for the shareholders. In the public arena, the union negotiates for the workers and public officials are supposed to represent the voters and taxpayers. However, to the extent that unions are instrumental in electing the public officials, there may be a possible conflict of interest.
