Thoughts on the Budget Deficit, the Debt Ceiling, and Economic Growth

Our worry is that a narrow focus on a single variable (be it the debt level and/or the budget deficit) could lead to solutions that result in dramatic improvements in that variable, but could make the overall economic environment worse off. When dealing with these variables, it is imperative that we take into account the interaction with the rest of the economy and how the path of the economy affects the debt ceiling and budget deficit.
